Help Desk: Protecting Yourself From Telephone Scams

Though creditable telemarketers follow the rules, scammers do not and the 11Alive Help Desk wants you to be aware of these scams.

Telephone scams are becoming more and more common these days. Do not depend on your caller ID for the legitimacy of a phone call. New technology now makes it easier for telephone numbers to be faked. Be careful not to do business with a company that is calling at inappropriate times. When faced with a telemarketer's phone call, the Consumer Federation of America suggests to be sure that they are first calling between the hours of 8:00 a.m- 9:00 p.m. Any sales calls before or after those times are not allowed.

Church leader recovers from cardiac arrest on pulpit

MCDONOUGH, Ga. -- Two years ago, a local congregation saw its faith tested in the place where faith matters most.

One of its leaders collapsed on the pulpit during an Easter Sunday service.

Sean Peacock does not remember the day well, but he has heard all about it. While leading the congregation in a song at Faith Tabernacle Church in Conyers, the McDonough native suffered cardiac arrest and fell to the ground.

Peacock's heart stopped beating for 22 minutes. His sister did CPR until emergency personnel arrived, and he was rushed to Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta.

He spent two days in a coma and then three weeks in the hospital. When Peacock got out, he pushed forward on a new cause.

The church in Conyers didn't have defibrillators. "Once you're attached to a defibrillator," Peacock learned, "your chances of survival go up 30%."

Metro jobless rate drops to 8.3 percent

Metro jobless rate drops to 8.3 percent

ATLANTA -- Metro Atlanta's unemployment rate declined to 8.3 percent in Februray.

That's down from 8.7 percent in January and well under the jobless rate of 9.3 percent from February a year ago.

Henry County's unemployment rate was 8.4 percent in February.

The new numbers were released early Thursday by the Georgia Department of Labor.

Officials say the rate declined because the number of jobs increased and there were fewer new layoffs.

The number of jobs in metro Atlanta increased by 6,400, climbing to 2.37 million from 2.36 million in January.

Most of the growth was in professional and business services, and education and health care. Some seasonal jobs were lost in trade, transportation and warehousing.

The metro Atlanta unemployment data is not seasonally adjusted.
