Hampton Main Street is hosting the annual chili cook-off  at the historic Hampton Depot Park.

From 2 until 5 p.m., taste the best of Hampton chilis.  Be a contestant -- entry fee is $25.  Tasting spoon is $1.  Cake walks, DJ, and more!

Registration info at www.cityofhampton-ga.gov or www.mainstreethamptonga.com.   After the cook-off, tour the old Berea Cemetery.  Tickets are available at Speak Easy Book Store, 5 East Main Street, Hampton.  Adults: $10, 12 and under $5, under 6--free.  Learn the history of Hampton from locals presenting characters from Hampton's history.  This event is by the Hampton Historic Preservation Commission.

Prudential Spirit of Community Awards searching for top volunteers

ATLANTA -- Georgia students in grades 5-12 are encouraged to apply for the 2013 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards.

The awards program began searching for its next batch of honorees this week. Recipients of the award are young people who have made meaningful contributions to their communities through volunteer service.

"We have been recognizing youth volunteers since 1995 and still, every year, we're amazed by the stories of exemplary community service," Prudential chairman and CEO John Strangfeld said in a statement. "We look forward to honoring the top youth volunteers of 2013 for their selflessness, their initiative and their dedication to changing communities for the better."

Eat out, raise money, help kids

MCDONOUGH, Ga. -- You can do your part this week to curb Georgia's high school dropout rate. All you need to do is eat at one of your favorite restaurants.

On Thursday, Aug. 23, proceeds from restaurants across the state will be donated to Communities in Schools of Georgia, an organization that encourages young people to complete their education and succeed in life.

The sixth annual Dine Out for Kids event hopes to exceed last year's total of $30,000 for children in the state.

Communities in Schools, which has chapters across the country, provides mentoring and after-school services, including parent education, literacy programs and youth leadership opportunities.

Briggs & Stratton donates school supplies to Henry students

HENRY COUNTY, Ga. -- Monday is the first day of school in Henry County and, thanks to a generous donation from Briggs & Stratton, the school year will be a little brighter for many students.

Briggs & Stratton, which produces lawn mower parts, gave backpacks, folders and other materials to the school system. This gift will ease the transition from summer to the classroom for kids in need.

Nearly 40,000 students will be back in the classroom on the first day of school.

Buy a Dairy Queen Blizzard, give a miracle

ATLANTA -- Enjoy a cool treat and help kids in need at the same time on Dairy Queen's Miracle Treat Day.

On Thursday, June 26, the fast food chain will donate one dollar from every Blizzard Treat sold to Children's Miracle Network Hospitals, which provides funding for 170 children's hospitals in North America.
