MCDONOUGH: The homecoming kicker

MCDONOUGH, Ga. -- Community Christian School in Henry County plays eight-man football... except when they kick.

Katie Davidson has been a star soccer player since grade school, and she just happened to be hitting eighth grade at a unique point in her school's history.

"In 2009 we started a football program here at Community Christian School," recalls athletic director Greg Dickens, "And I was walking the hallways looking for people who might be interested in playing."

The team came to Katie.

Her reaction: "I was like, 'Whaaaaat?'"

But pretty soon, Katie was the pink-cleated, strong-legged, automatic-three-points-on-the-board ace for Community Christian. She also became a point of pride for the guys on the team.

Dickens remembers one time in '09 when Katie "was kicking the ball off, and she got hit; she took a pretty good lick, and the guys took offense to it."

"He just goes straight to her after she kicks the ball," said teammate Antonio McCurdy. "We made sure it didn't happen again."

In addition to being a rallying point for her teammates, Katie has served as a noticeable role model for younger girls.

"Little kids see me at school, and they're like, 'She's the kicker'," muses the sophomore.

This past month, Katie got a new title: Homecoming Princess of the 10th grade.

"They had to change the girls' requirement for what they wear," she said. "They had to add football uniforms" in addition to dresses.
