Our Embarrassing Senator

Our Embarrassing Senator

I was born in 1955, the son of a career Coast Guard father.  We lived in rental houses, base housing and only one house my father actually bought.  I did not know I was a Southerner until he retired and the family moved back to the very place he farmed as a boy.  It was 1968 when we landed in Dacula, Georgia – or half way between Dacula and Lawrenceville on the Alcovy River.

In our family there was a sense of the world and its people having different colors; different accents depicting wherever they were from; and, different cultures.  A sense of it all, but we were sheltered from the discord of the 1950s and 1960s when our country experienced growing pains.

When Mr. Van Sickle was told he needed a kidney transplant earlier this year, it turned out the couple had been a match in more ways than one. On Thursday, August 11, Mrs. Van Sickle donated a kidney to her husband in a procedure performed at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta, Ga.

“We’ve had to put a lot of plans on hold because of my health,” said Mr. Van Sickle following his successful transplant. “I was in stage four renal failure and the future was very uncertain.
