ATLANTA – Frank Thornton is celebrating a colossal windfall from the Georgia Lottery. Thornton, a McDonough resident, has won a $1 million top prize playing the instant game Georgia Lottery’s 20th Anniversary Extravaganza.

While preparing for a game-day cookout, Thornton stopped at the Publix Super Market at 920 Highway 81 East in McDonough, for trash bags and a lottery ticket.

He purchased the lucky ticket from the Georgia Lottery’s Instant Ticket Vending Machine inside of the store.

“Normally, I wait until I get home to scratch a ticket,” he explained. “But I said, ‘Let me scratch it now and see.’”

Thornton, 76, was surprised to see the matching No. 37 with $1 million as the prize.

“I said, ‘This is true! This is matching,’ ” he recalled. “I looked again, and I couldn’t believe it.”

The lucky winner anticipates sharing a portion with his four adult children, purchasing a new car and new furniture for his home.
