Commissioners approve airport name change; Tara Field changes to Atlanta South Regional

The Henry County Board of Commissioners approved two resolutions authorizing the local identifier and city name change for the Atlanta South Regional Airport, formerly known as Tara Field.

Henry County acquired the airport several months ago and is currently establishing new operational standards and direction for all aviation activities. A resolution is required by both the FAA and the Georgia Department of Transportation for the Board of Commissioners to institute changes to the local identifier and associated city.

The local identifier is an easily recognizable alphanumeric code used to maintain consistency and clarity with the new name of the airport. The new location identifier for Atlanta South Regional Airport has been changed to ASR.

The associated city address for Atlanta South Regional Airport will be the city of Atlanta in order to be more competitive in the marketplace. According Butch Sanders, County Manager, having the associated city as Atlanta as opposed to Hampton, will help market the airport more effectively.

“When pilots are planning a trip to Atlanta, and looking for an airport in the Atlanta area, they won’t likely recognize Hampton,” said Sanders. “By associating with Atlanta, we become a more viable choice for them, which in turn, will make the Atlanta South Regional Airport more marketable and competitive.”
